Superb 12 Peg Solid Silver Butt Marker Chester 1902 Superb 12 Peg Solid Silver Butt Marker Chester 1902 Offered for auction is a fabulous solid silver butt marker with 12 numbered pegs made by Colen Cheshire and assayed in Chester in 1902. The case features Art Nouveau style bright cut foliate engraving with a vacant shield shaped cartouche to the front. There is a full set of hallmarks for Chester on the inside lip and a matching date letter with lion passant on the outside of the lid. The hinge is nice and strong and the lid is a snug fit. Inside the case are a series of holes to accommodate the 12 numbered pegs. Each peg is individually numbered from 1 to 12 in Roman numerals. I am not quite sure what the pegs are made from but I have noticed that some are shorter than others and the knobs at the top of the pegs are not identical so I don't know if they are replacements or not. Condition of the case is excellent with just the usual surface marks obtained through age. The case is a good size measuring approximately 2 inches square (it is slightly wider than it is tall) and just under half an inch deep. Metric H/W/D is 50mm/48mm/11mm. Overall weight is approximately 52.5 grams. This is a very usable antique for the shooting enthusiast or a wonderful cabinet piece for the silver collector.
