This is a great 1780-1800 FANBACK WINDSOR SIDE CHAIR with great turnings and proportions that is still tight after 200 years of use that I have had for a number of years. This example is very similar to plate 2691 in WALLACE NUTTINGS FUNRITURE TREASURY which he describes as "A VERY PERFECT TYPE FOR A LIGHT SIDE CHAIR WITH A FAN, A GOOD TAPER ON THE LEGS, AND FINE HARMONY BETWEEN THEM AND THE BACK STILES." This is truly a great 18th century chair. It retains its full seat height at 16 1/4", and is overall 36" high, 21 1/2" wide, 20 1/2" deep. This chair has been repainted with one of the most beautiful surfaces I have ever seen -- a very thin brownish red stain that lets the grain of the wood show through with a dull dark brown wax coat on top. The feel of the surface is satinlike and smoothe with the worn texture of the wood being readily accessible to the finger tips-- a wonderful surface. The underside of the seat displays a few wormholes indicative of the chair's age. At some point this chair was converted to a rocker by cutting small 1 1/4" by 1/4" deep sections out of the outside lower portions of the legs. These have been skillfully filled in with appropriate wood repairs and barely show (see phtots). Someone squeezed some hide glue? into a small split on the underside of the seat to keep the seat stable in overheat house. read more
