A Delightful 19th or Early 20th Century Century Maiolica or Faience Charger, Signed CM to the Reverse. Italian or Possibly French This is a delightful tin glazed maiolica or faience charger of good size with superb decoration of a bird a hare and the sun. The -polychrome decoration is painted in a confident, yet primitive and charming manner, the sun having a delightful face. The manganese, cobalt, yellow and green colours are those used in much older pieces of maiolica and faience, and indeed Delftware, indeed it is quite possible that this piece is much older than I think - I am not an expert and really cannot say for sure. It is signed CM to the reverse and I have not been able to identify this mark - If anyone does know I would love to hear form you. I have had this in a cupboard for over 10 years now and it is time to move it on - with regret - I do love the picture but have never found the right place for it. The measures approx 35 cm. in diameter. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks or restoration - there are glaze misses at the rim where it has stood on stilts in the kiln - this is as made. The back is dirty and shows where a hanger has been in the past and there is also the remains of a paper label which looks French or Italian - I have not washed it in case I remove an identifying clue but I have wiped read more
