EXCEPTIONAL MASTERPIECE MAORI HEI MATAU BONE CARVING pendant by Mike Wilkinson, a Nga Puhi Maori master carver. Mike has carved his beautiful traditional designs for many years and is known for the perfect finish and individual character of each of his carvings. All Mike's work is completely hand carved, sanded and finished by his own hands and each piece is one of a kind. The Hei Matau is the legendary fish hook with which Maori warrior Maui is said to have pulled the North Island of New Zealand from the South Island. It signifies triumph and determination. . Carved on both sides, the pendant is traditionally bound and has exquisite detail and a beautiful curve and finish. It is bound onto a beige plaited cord with bone toggle, and measures 1.6" long by 1.4" wide with an 8mm depth. Please note that t are markings and shadings in natural bone - all Mike's bone carvings are properly prepared and have no bacteria or odor - bright white shiny bone is a feature of Asian mass made bone items which have been soaked in hydrogen peroxide - this destroys the fiber of the bone and results in cracks and breakages.
