Superb Moai Papa, 19 th Century Easter Island NO RESERVE Barahona-Geisse Collection Outstanding piece of the most ancient Rapa Nui popular art. The fine shapes of the Classic Papa moai, contrasts with this villager woman with rough features. Her thick face, and the submission in her face, reveals the low position on the complex society of the old Rapa Nui and it is confirmed with the style used on the rest of her body. Clearly, the carver also belonged to the same social position. This stout nosed moai, with a thick neck, ear without prominent earlobes, a simple hairstyle and a sneer on her mouth which denotes submission, seems the most pure representation of the modest Rapa Nui woman. A cylinder like torso completes this sometimes pathetic picture, which however, is typical Polynesia classic art. The stiffness of the volumes comes to life with the expression of her eyes, and the geometrical analysis looses validity when a piece has such strength. This is not a moai papa made "by the order"; refined and beautiful as many of the moai papa witch families of lineage asked to the best carvers. This art is made with the emotion of the moment; with no further interest that feeling satisfied with themselves, the artists only tries to represent the essence of his vision. The density of this wood is particularly high and it seems to be Makoi Root, because it has some even speckles and an oily finished tells me this is the kind of wood. The patina has darkened this wood from its original yellow and the surface is absolutely polished and worn out.
