This is an Engineer's Chain used for Surveying. It is Marked on One Side of the Brass Handle, W & L. E. Gurley, Stands for "William Gurley and Louis Ephraim Gurley". Troy N.Y. On the other Brass Handle one side is Marked J. M Grumman, Stands for "Josiah M Grumman", Patent. On the other side of this Brass Handle it is marked 33 FT Steel No 15. The rings are identical but have different markings. I understand that in 1870 W. & L. E. Gurley Bought J. M. Grumman's Patent. I am not sure what years L. M. Grumman's Patent was used by W. L. E. Gruley. I counted 48 Chain links on this example. Each Link measures close to 8 inches 48 x 8 = 384" divided by 12" = 32 Feet.. From the top of the handle to the link is 6' each, that makes the 33' Ft. I believe. Some ruff spots on the chain links, but all intact. Buyer pays shipping and Insurance. Please ask any questions you have prior to bidding. This example was found in a suit case. No repairs that I know of have been made. Thank you so much, for interest. No Reserve. I am not an expert on this. But the names on the Chain match the names in Surveying History. Have a wonderful Day.
