This sword is listed as an 1887 Spanish Infantry Sword. This long straight sword was made from about 1887 through 1918. These long straight swords are often described as heavy and awkward hinderances to quietly moving or marching troops. A unique aspect of this sword is the "Bowl" hand guard from the hilt to the pommel. Deeply etched in the exterior of the "Bowl" is a crowned crested eagle exhibiting a painted cross. Spain's famous Toledo manufacturer brought this extra heavy "Bowl" protection foward from earlier fighting designs. The handle itself is close grain hardwood that is cross hatched and securly attached with dedicated through screws. The marking on the ricasso consists only the three letter Toledo insignia under a crown. T is the number "38345" stamped on one ricasso and the word "SPAIN" on the back edge. The blade is high quality steel, a very heavy design, and very sturdy down to the spear point tip. Uniquely, the sword contains an additional fuller (Blood Groove) on the back side of the cutting edge for 11" behind the point, certainly this sword was designed for the thrust and remove attack. The blade is highly polished and does not appear to be nickle plated. T is very slight evidence of a few age spots on the blade but no rust.
