Masks were often representations of an ancestor. Ancestor worship was a primal ritual throughout the new world. The Taino kept skulls of important kin in cotton slings on beams in their dwellings. Often the body would be buried under the floor. This piece is made of a fine grained light brown stone and features a headband and ear spools. It measures 10.2cm or 4". From Hispaniola, likely the Dominican Republic.Dates 1000-1500ADIf you are interested in Taino art history, check out my book "Taino Sculpture, Art of the Gods" available on eBay and Amazon.
