This is a light “Teal” Blue Green Berry Bowl... with an Iridescent Carnival Glass finish that’s simply alive with sparkle... luster... and elusive... ever changing rainbows of color!!!... It stands just a bit over 3 ½ inches tall... 7 and ½ inches across its “saw-tooth” top rim... and it appears to be in excellent condition. We usually find Bowls with this “saw-tooth” top rim in less than perfect condition... with chipped or missing “teeth”. The Bowl is heavy... and the slightest bump to that exposed top rim would usual results in a chipped “tooth”. But all of the “teeth” in this saw-tooth rim appear to be intact. The body glass of this Berry Bowl is a translucent Teal... or Blue Green glass color. This transparency allows us to enjoy this very “busy” Pin Wheel pattern... not only on the outside of the Bowl... but also from the inside through the body glass. And it’s also unusual to find a glassmaker investing in a Carnival Glass finish on a lighter colored body glass such as this. Most of the time they reserve it for the darker shades of glass. But when they do make that investment... look at the dazzling results!!!... For some unknown reason this Translucent Teal glass is a color that we don’t run across that often. Sometimes the ingredients required to produce a particular glass color are simply too expensive... making it impractical for the glassmaker to produce a competitively priced product. Is this the case with this Teal Blue Green Glass???... Could Be!!... But look at the dazzling array of sparkle and luster that just seems to leap off the surface of this piece. And the elusive... but ever present... rainbows of colors that seem to “slip” effortlessly across the surface. This Iridescent Carnival Glass Bowl... will never be boring!!!... The extra thick construction of this Bowl allows exceptionally deep recesses in the design. All of these deep “nooks and crannies” act as reflecting mirrors... sending back to the eye... not only splashes of color... but “gobs” of sparkle and luster!!!... Here again we have a “pattern” that has been given numerous names by collectors over the years. A good portion of the “glass makers” assigned only a “number” to reference a new introduction into their line... and it was the collecting public that would come up with a “name” to help identify the pattern. Some of the names I’ve encountered for this pattern have been... “Pinwheel”... “Whirling Star”... and “Buzz Saw”. And I feel sure there are others I’ve not heard!!!... I’m finding no “maker’s mark” on this Bowl... but I feel quite confident in saying that it came from the L. E. Smith Glass Company. They were a prolific producer of hand-pressed glassware of this type. The original L. E. Smith Glass Company opened for business in 1907... and after 97 years of continuous production... closed in early July of 2004. About a year later... the Company reopened under new management. In a tour through the factory... (I was there in the summer of 2005)... I was happy to see that a real effort was being put forth to reestablish this glass maker to it’s previous status. I’m told that there are two “books” in the making... covering both the history of this company... and the glassware they produced over the years. When... and if... these books reach the market... we will do our best to make them available to our collector friends. Beauty and practicality... all wrapped up in this bright... lively... Berry Bowl... with its Translucent Teal body glass... and sparkling Iridescent Carnival Glass finish. Without a doubt... this stunning piece of glassware is destine to give pleasure today... tomorrow... and for years to come!!!...
