Original Kuninori Japanese Woodblock The Genpei Wars: The Battle of Yashima The Genpei Wars: The Battle of Yashima 19th Century Figural Prints- The 19th century was a time of great popularity for woodblock prints in Japan. While Hokusai and Hiroshige dominated the landscape print field, artists like Kuniyoshi, Kunisada (Toyokuni III), Kunichika and others were in the forefront of the figural print genre. These stunning prints from the kabuki, daily life, portraits of courtesans and samurai and famous scenes of Japan were hugely popular. New releases by the most famous artists were so anticipated that buyers lined up the morning a print was to be first offered. These beautiful antique prints are treasures from the Edo culture in its most decadent period. From portraits of stunning beauties to scenes of fighting samurai, these prints transport the viewer to another time, a place as compelling as it is unusual to us in the modern world. Comments- The Genpei Wars were the last great conflict between the Taira and Minomoto clans in late Heian period Japan . They resulted in the fall of the Taira clan and the establishment of the Kamakura shogunate. This terrific original 19th century triptych the noted artist Kuninori has created a fantastic illustration of men battling at sea. Two samurai exchange arrows in a fierce fight. Beautiful samurai triptych. The men in traditional armor and riding aboard wooden warrior ships. An outstanding choice in very nice condition. Good for the collector interested in samurai prints or for someone looking for a knockout centerpiece for any room. Artist- Kuninori Image size- 28 1/2" x 14 1/4" Condition- Excellent color and detail. This print is not backed. Three panels attached at the seams for presentation as a triptych. Some light pink ink offsetting, not serious. A couple light wrinkles in left panel from previous folio mounting, a couple light remnants from previous mounting on reverse, not serious.
