In the far-off days when Movie Theaters were considered as 'Palaces of Entertainment', and computers were just silly science fiction stuff, movie stills were the main way to advertise upcoming films.T were three kinds of stills: FOH shots were made in both black and white and color. These were put in special showcases were built at the front of theaters, arranged so perspective filmgoers could look at images from a film before buying a ticket for that film. Press Stills were distributed to newspapers and magazines. In most cases, these included many shots beyond the basic FOH still and were used for articles and reviews. Special shots were printed from contact sheet numbers for use in very particular pieces in magazines or books. As these were done in the smallest numbers, they are often the hardest of all to find. This week, I am going to continue to celebrate Britain's HAMMER FILMS--the company who did the best gothic horror movies of the last half of the century. THE MUMMY was Hammer's continuation of a trend. They had become succesful redoing Universal Horrors in color with modern storylines and gore--this had worked for Dracula and Frankenstein--the Mummy was the next logical step.
