ARTIST "Thomas Heywood" 1570 - 1641 The painting is signed at the top which is covered by the mount (See Photos) He was a playwright, actor and author, in 1598 he produced a stage production of William Shakespear's play "The Merchant of Venice" .He altered some of the Prologues and Epilogues from the original work and apparently they are used in modern productions. Thomas Heywood was active between the Elizabethan and Jacobean period, studied at Cambridge later moved to London where he joined an acting group Admirals Men, he did not take any payments which it was thought he was a sharer in the company. The person in the painting is Shylock from the play The merchant of Venice who was the villan as a rich Jewish money lender. I have attributed the painting to Thomas Heywood as that is the only name on the painting besides the Inscription INSCRIBED Lower right "Shylock" CONDITION The painting really is in remarkable aged condition with no indication of any foxing or repairs, it shows an half portrait of Shylock, unfortunately it does not give the sitters name, i am sure their must be something in the archives saying who acted the part in 1598. For collectors of old paintings or Shakespearian History this would be a superb addition to the collection. If you require any other photos please contact me. MEDIUM Watercolour pasted on
