Thomas Whitney listed in Pennsylvana directores from 1802 to 1824 as a mathmatical maker and supplier of instruments.Also supplied instruments used by the Lewis and Clark expedition.Instrument is brass.measures 14"lg. with a 6"dia.dia.No box.not an expert in the field but appears to be in good condition.Glass and needle are good but their may be an attachment missing that should go with it.Screw on bottom locks needle for transporting.you are buying what is in the pictures as listed. A good fellow has notifide me that it is an early american mining dial theodolite for underground surveying and maping mines.
