Thuathe Meteorite History of the Thuathe meteorite fall: The Thuathe meteorite fell at 3:49 pm on July 21, 2002 on the Thuathe Plateau in western Lesotho. Nearly the entire small country of Lesotho was startled by a brilliant fireball that appeared in the sky, heading west. Over a thousand small stones fell in a small area that spanned 7 miles long by two miles wide. This area is known as the strewnfield. Classification Data: Thuathe is a type of meteorite called a Chondrite, (H4). Around 35 to 40 kilograms of Thuathe was recovered. I went to Thuathe 8 months after the fall, and bought over 20 kilograms of stones from the local tribespeople. I made another trip a month later and bought several more kilograms of meteorites. The photo below is of myself with the local children. This offering consists of a beautiful complete individual with fusion crust. Nice Thuathe stones are highly sought after, so this piece is a fine addition to any meteorite collection. This piece weighs 7.56 grams. Click to see the full Thuathe story and more photos.
