Here we have an Antique, G. Tiemann & Co. NY, Civil War Era, Surgeon's Rosewood Cased 'Capital Medical Instrument Set'. George Tiemann started manufacturing medical equipment in New York City in 1826 and was a major supplier to the Civil War U.S. Union Army in the 1860's. The label on the lid liner reads: G. TIEMANN & CO. MANUFACTURERS OF SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS 67 CHATHAM ST. NY. Tiemann operated at several addresses over the years and his manuf. operations at 67 Chatham St. occurred from 1863/1864 to 1871. As you can see from the pictures the ROSEWOOD case for this set has seen some damage over the years with small pieces of wood missing and cracks. The case measures: 16-1/4"L x 5-1/4"W x 3-1/2"D. A previous owner appears to have made some repairs. The left side hinge is not attached to the base since there is a piece of wood missing at that location. Also, over the many years it looks like some instruments came and went, and some were replaced by other owners of this set. No key for the lock. PLEASE REVEW PICs !! I'm not a doctor, but an admirer of medical instruments and the Civil War period, so I will do my best to list below the contents (including the maker): Surgeon's bone / amputation saw w/ Ebony handle - TIEMANN & CO. Trepanning cranial hole saw, brass w/ animal horn handle - no maker steel bone cutter / pliers - TIEMANN read more
