This auction is for a Torsion Balance Co. scale of New York. The metal tag for this case reads as follows;The Torsion Balance Co., Style 5055, No. B75196, Capacity 120 G, Class A, Made in USAThis Laboratory / Jewelers Balance Scale is just as clean and nice looking as the pictures show it to be. It has been well cared for over the years. The chrome metal frame is bright and shiny. All the glass panes are crack free. I have seen other scales like this one but none were in this kind of condition.I consider this jewelers balance scale to be in great condition for its approximate 100 year old age. IT WORKS...... I removed the glass top and calibrated it to a "0" reading on the indicator needles. I then used my Gram weights to check it for accuracy. This scale will weigh up to 120 grams.To adjust, calibrate, this scale you remove two screws on the glass top. After removing the glass top you can access the scale's working parts. On the bottom balance beam t is a small sliding weight. I slid this weight, on the beam, until I obtained a "0" reading with the needle indicator points. That is red tipped indicator point to red tipped indicator point. Each needle point of the indicators line up directly across from each other to indicate a "0" reading. I have included a picture in my listing showing my weights on the scale and the scale reading "0". I was using two 20 gram weights. ( I am sure the small sliding weight on the lower balance beam will move during shipping. You will have to use the procedure above to readjust for "0" on the scale. )T is an adjustment knob on the front of the base. When turned clockwise it locks the balance beam from moving. It is used while placing items on the scale to be weighed. Then it is slowly turned counterclockwise to let the scale beam move the indicator needles. It is also used while transporting the unit, to prevent damage to the scale's moving beam parts.T is a small knob on the right hand side of the glass frame. It is used to adjust for tiny weight differences between "0" and "1" gram. The finger knob moves a rod from right to left. The rod, inside the glass case, has two forked fingers on it. Using the rod's finger knob these forked fingers are turned ahead to engage a small slide weight on graduated scale. The weight can be slid from 0 to 1 gram. The lines on the scale are calibrated in 1-1/100th gram increments and 1/10th gram increments.This is a super sensitive scale. That is why it was used in laboratories as well as used for weighing precious metals such as gold.T are two leveling screws on each end of the scale base and a small round foot on the back of the base. The scale can be perfectly leveled using these screws.This Laboratory, Jeweler's or Gold scale is 12 inches long, 5 1/2 inches wide and 7 inches tall. It weighs 7 pounds. Shipping & handling for this item will be $19.99 using UPS Ground delivery. Insurance will be included.
