Stamped on the rear with 'Le Tour De France' & official tour makers name 'Arthus Bertrand' 1996 Tour Quick Facts: The 1996 Tour de France was 3,764.9 kilometers long and was ridden at an average speed of 39.236 km/hr. There were 198 starters of whom 129 made it to Paris. The 1996 Tour had two major revelations. Miguel Indurain, who was thought to be a shoo-in for a record-setting sixth Tour win bonked near the end of stage 7. From there to the through the rest of the Tour he struggled. Winner Bjarne Riis clearly tired towards the end of the Tour but his superb domestique, Jan Ullrich, grew stronger with every passing day and was clearly the race's strongest rider by the time the Tour reached Paris.
