This Painted Pony memorializes Route 66. Originally started as a trail by Indians, the route became a stage line 20 years before the Civil War. In 1926 Route 66 was named and became the first National Highway. It was 2,400 miles in length. It began in Chicago, traveled south to Springfield, Illinois, to St. Louis Missouri, to Joplin, Missouri, to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Oklahoma City, to Amarillo, Texas. It then went West through Albuquerque, Flagstaff, Barstow, California and ended in LA. This was a time before franchises. It was a time when diners, motels, gas stations and tourist attractions were Mom and Pop businesses. Food was meant to be comfort food... not food one could get "while on the go." This was a time before Holiday Inn, Best Western, McDonald's, and Exxon. Travel was conducted at a slower pace. The towns one traveled through at that time were much more a part of the journey than they are today.
