This item represents the hardcover book" Trains of Recollection ...Drawn from Fifty Years of Railway Service in Scotland and Canada, and told to Arthur Hawkes" by D.B. HannaThis book is an autobiography of David Blyth Hanna (1858-1938), as told by him to Arthur Hawkes. (Hawkes served for several years as the Superintendent of Publicity for the Canadian Northern Railway) Hanna was born in Scotland, and at age 14, he began selling tickets for the Glasgow, Barrhead and Kilmarnock Railway. Ten years later in 1882, he emigrated to Canada to assume a position with the Grand Trunk Railway and to begin forty years of railroading in Canada. In 1896, he was hired by William Mackenzie and Donald Mann, the promoters of the Canadian Northern Railway, as Superintendent of the Lake Manitoba Railway and Canal Co. In 1902, Hanna was named as third vice president of the Canadian Northern, a postion he held for 15 years. After the Canadian government acquired the Canadian Northern in 1917, he was elected president of the company and subsequently became the first president of the Canadian National Railways when it was formed. He retired in 1922. A fascinating first-hand account of Canadian railroading during its third era of great expansion.
