REDFIELDIA Very Rare Triassic Fish This is a specimen of Redfieldia - a very rare fish from the Triassic (Carnian - 235 million years) Bull Run shale of Virginia . These specimens were collected by Potomac Museum Group in the early 1980's as part of a Triassic research project. T are no other comparable specimens of this type available anyw These specimens are extremely important in the study of Plate Tectonics. In Permian-Triassic time the super landmass of Pangea was gradually breaking up. North America and Africa were splitting apart and great rift valleys formed between the two continents. Lakes filled these valleys and in their waters lived the fish you see The finest Triassic fish known in the US are from this particular site. The detail in these specimens is excellent, with scales, skull parts and even teeth clearly visible. The site was situated in a private field in central Virginia near Licking Run Creek, a tributary to Bull Run . PMG spent two years researching and prospecting the region for Triassic fossils, then secured permission and help from the land owner to carefully expose this one site and prepare the excavation for systematic research.
