"WORLDS FIRST AMPHIBIOUS TRANSPORT DOCK" (MEDITERRANEAN CRUISE) July 1970 -- December 1970 It had over 6000 Helo landings on it's deck, when the book went to pressThis book has a hard bound green/light green cover and it is in almost NEW condition.Other ships in "The Carib Ready Squadron" were : Flagship - U.S.S. Francis Marion (LPA - 249) U.S.S. Rankin (LKA - 103) U.S.S. Fort Mandan (LSD - 21) U.S.S. Desoto County (LST - 1171)Contains: Ship's Log, Ship's History, Crew's names/pictures & pictures of the Mediterranean deployment. "USS Raleigh [LDP-1], the world's first amphibious transport dock, was named in honor of Sir Walter, the famed explorer & the city of Raleigh, NC. Built in New York Naval Shipyard, it was christened on 17 Mar, 1962. Overall length of 521 feet & a beam of 100 feet. In addition to her complement of 450 officers & men, RALEIGH has the capacity to embark over 800 Marines." ....from Ship's History page.This would be a great gift for anyone who was in the navy or collects militaria items.
