This barn lanternis the ultimate in primitive “make do” utilitarian lighting, created to fill a need using resources at hand. Each rolled rim, soldiered seam and cut edge was handmade. The lantern was handcrafted of tin, cut to size, then bent to shape and turned to create seams. The seams are irregular, but sound and strong. The reflector (or hood) was made big to make the most of candlelight. It includes an opening for a glass chimney—if you were lucky enough to have one. The candleholder is a generous size and includes a small reflector to further protect and enhance the flickering light, and includes a reservoir to catch the dripping wax. The handle was made to carry the lantern comfortably from place to place and chore to chore until it was ready to be hung on the nearest peg, hook or anything else that was handy. The lantern measures 12” tall and 11¾” wide and the reservoir measures 4¾” wide and 5” deep. It has its original patina and the color is just as it should be, a rich and weathered earthy brown.
