The first year of this important Boston semi-monthly periodical: 24 issues from April 1,1824 through March 15, 1825.Although the Gazette regularly provided a steady stream of of book reviews and related miscellany for the readers of the young American republic, it is chiefly regarded today as perhaps the first important magazine of American poetry, notable for the many first appearances of poems by William Cullen Bryant and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, among others. Indeed, the very first issue contains Bryant's poem "Rizpah", attributed to the poet "B." A few months later, in the November 15, 1824 issue, Master Bryant's poetry is joined with a first appearance of Longfellow: the poem "Thanksgiving," attributed to "H.W.L."380 pages, bound in one volume, quarter leather over marbled boards. The front board is detached but present, the backstrip deteriorating, the interior binding otherwise secure; some foxing to the endpapers and very minor foxing throughout. A scarce working copy of this important literary landmark, ready to be treasured as is, or given the respect it deserves with a professional rebinding.A great addition to any collection, starting at a low opening bid and with no reserve.
