after graduating West Point followed by typical frontier duty, "Maryland" Steuart joined the Confederate Army as a regular captain. He soon became Lt. Colonel of the orphan 1st Maryland Infantry and fought at 1st Manassas. He was promoted to Brigadier General in March 1862 and served in the Valley being severely wounded at Cross Keys. At Gettysburg, Stuart led a brigade in Johnson's Division of the 2nd Corps and remained in command until captured at the "Mule Shoe" in May 1864. Exchanged, Steuart was given a brigade in Pickett's Division and witnessed the dying gasp of the Army of Northern Virginia at Five Forks. He surrendered the remnants of his brigade at Appomattox.Condition: Albumen near EXC.
