An original and historic Mexican War-Civil War period diploma from the WEST POINT MILITARY ACADEMY, from the estate of Major General Richard Delafield....Size 16 1/4" x 21 3/4" [too large for scanner, shown in parts], never used, engraved and printed on vellum, very good condition but shows its age with light staining and spots of foxing, had been rolled and stored in a barn for many years. This historic diploma would look very impressive if framed....RICHARD DELAFIELD [1793-1873] was a career military officer who graduated West Point in 1818. He was a member of the Corps of Army Engineers, and designed many of the principal roads and fortifications on the East Coast. He served as Superintendent of West Point 1838-1845 and rebuilt the Academy after the disastrous fire that occurred just prior to his appointment. He led the Delafield Commission in 1856 which went to Europe to observe the Crimean War. He was then re-appointed Superintendent of West Point from 1856-1861. He was a Major General in the Civil War and commanded the Army Corps of Engineers.....Guaranteed original.....$6.00 shipping rolled in tube.....
