Offered at auction is a highly unusual one-half gallon stoneware pan or butter crock has profuse dark cobalt blue decoration all the way around. This pan or spouted butter crock has the cobalt commas or drooping feathers typical of Shenandoah Valley and Baltimore pottery(see pics). Exact origin is unknown, but this one is probably from either Virginia or Baltimore, Maryland. This pan dates from the last quarter of the 19th-century. The ear ends are also double-decorated with blue(see pics). This piece measures just 5 3/4 inches in height, about 7 1/2 inches across the rim and about 5 1/2 inches across the base. T are no makers or capacity marks. T are three incised lines of additional decoration just under the rim, the lowest being just under the handle ends. Condition is good with no hairlines or cracks anyw T are several rim and spout chips and each ear has a small chip(see pics). Color is brownish-gray with very dark blue shaded decoration. Stoneware pans are uncommon items.
