This listing is for a wonderful antique American Art Nouveau Sterling Silver match safe/vesta case, c. 1940'sThis beautiful silver match safe is decorated with a highly detailed embossed floral garland with design in high relief. Large center cartouche with fancy engraved name "GAN" on one sideThe case is in excellent condition just a tiny dent on the bottom,Marked "Sterling" on interior lip edgeWhy are they called vesta cases?These cases take their name from the virgin Roman goddess of fire, home, hearth and family. Usually Vesta was depicted as the fire in her temple. Only Vestals (her priestesses) were allowed into her temple.
