A fine Japanese manju netsuke carved of old ivory, measuring 1 3/8 X 3/8 ins., dating to the mid 19th century. The netsuke-shi has carved in relief a kappa wearing a large hat and carrying a food offering. We can tell this is a kappa, or mythological creature, from his appearance. The kappa typically has a pointed face, a depression or hole at the top of his head to hold water when he is out of the ponds he inhabits, and webbed feet. He may take the shape of a young boy or he may have features of a turtle. The reverse of the netsuke is uniquely hollowed to resemble a mushroom capThe carver’s signature, SAJI or SUKETSUGU, is on the front. Both variations of the name appear in Davey as ivory carvers. The netsuke is in excellent and original condition with no damage and only minimal wear.
