This auction is for a stunning example of a highly pyritised ammonite fossil of the species Promicroceras sp from the world famous Jurassic Coast beach of Charmouth, Dorset UK. The fossil measures 22mm (7/8 of an inch) across which is large for this species. The ammonite is beautifully preserved on both sides and has a wonderful golden colour and shine. The detail in the ribbing is very fine making it a very attractive fossil. Promicroceras are very beautiful ammonites and also very popular. Around 195 million years old, this fossil would make a wonderful addition to any collection. Please take some time to check out my other items and to add me to your favourites list . If you would like any more information on any of my fossils or anything fossil related please don't hesitate to email me, I'm always happy to try and help! Pyrite is a form of iron which sometimes occurs as a replacement mineral during the fossilisation process, depending on conditions in the sediment at the time in which the process takes place as well as the composition of the creature being preserved. It has the appearence of gold which is why it is commonly known as 'fool's gold'. Pyrite ammonites only occur in very specific and limited locations around the world and ones from Charmouth are just about the most famous of the lot.
