This unusual pair of Japanese laquer boxes stand 180mm (7'') high x 95mm (4'') across the middle and weigh a combined 430 grams. They are made from papier mache which has been covered in red laquer with gilded decoration of flowers and birds. They date from the late 1800's Meiji period and both lids do have an old crack to them (photo 2&5) but they do display very well and it is good to find a pair in such an unusual shape.
