Never seen one of these before. This brass compact/powderbox has a bevelled round mirror in the lid which twists off to reveal another mirror on a spring, under which the powder would be, when you push the mirror down the powder would puff up. It is too big for a handbag so I am guessing its a table top one. You fill from the base and there is a cover to the hole which prises off for filling. On the cover there are 4 US Patents listed which were registered by P C P Booty in 1926, 1928 and 1929 - I have printed a copy and will enclose for your interest with the compact or "Receptacle for face powder and the like" as its listed on the patents!
