UNUSUAL VINTAGE HOOKED RUG - Civil War "Maryland" ptn

I bought this antique hooked rug recently in New Jersey from a gentlemen who collected American hooked rugs. This particular one stood out from the rest because of its seeming simplistic pattern but the guy said "oh, the Maryland Rug..." I had just been attracted to the understated geometric design. He said that the middle pattern - half blue and half gray - was considered the Maryland pattern because Maryland was a blue and gray state during the Civil War, half Union and half Confederate but that the lines were not so clear cut and that's why it's not just straight down the middle. If this is not actually the correct story then it certainly was a decent theory and I bought it - the rug and the story. Anyway, it's pretty obviously antique but I don't think it's from earlier than 1900 but again I don't know the correct age for sure. It's a rag-brown background upon which sits, approximately in the middle, a rectangle sectioned in quarters, two blue and two gray, divided by pink lines. T do not appear to be any tears or dry rotting or anythign like that but t seems to be a stain close to one of the gray areas. The rug measures 43"x18"; the rectangle 19-1/2"x12".
