Union Switch & Signal Type M Code Transmitter - Rated for 110V, 100 Hz operation. This electromechanical transmitter is based on a synchronous motor and was used to establish the code rate of a typical coded track circuit. The code rate in turn reprsents the maximum permissible speed and is basd on occupancy of track circuits ahead. This unit will operate on 60 Hz at 60% of rated speed. These transmitters have long since been been replaced by electronic circuits. I don't know the age of this particular unit, but the engineering documentation for the Type M (included) is originally dated 1926, which means that this one was built some time after that. It was last used on the Northeast Corridor, and serviced on 7/11/85.The unit is quite heavy (approx. 40 lbs) which is why the shipping cost is a bit high. One unique feature of this unit, seen in the photos, is the solid glass (not porcelin) top plate.
