Wonderful original old model of a US Army/Navy target kite. This is an early example, dating from when the patent was first applied for but not yet issued. It lacks the Army and Navy model numbers of later kites. Made by the Ballard Aircraft Company of Authurdale, West Virginia. At sea, these were towed behind vessels by a man wearing a special harness. The kite originally had a rudder assembly (not present) that allowed the kite to be steered. Gunners would practice shooting holes in it. Small holes would be repaired by nylon discs, and the kite reused unless it was no longer worth fixing. This kite is made of the same nylon used for parachutes. It is in great shape, with no tears or holes. Has the original wood frame, cords, and fittings. Has not been bowed or put under any stress for as long as I've owned it. It's dusty, though, from hanging in my garage for years. The kite itself is approximately 5 feet across by 6 feet in length. I've included a picture from an old manual that shows how these were rigged in use. Buyer pays actual shipping charges only. See my other auctions. Satisfaction guaranteed!
