USA #26 tied to cover by the small double circle Leesburg, Va postmark dated 2 MAY 1861 (full yeardate in the postmark). Virginia seceded from the Union 17 APR 1861 and joined the CSA 7 MAY 1861. This cover falls into the very limited 20 day period between secession and admittance to the Confederacy known as the Virginia Independent State period. Addressed to Mr. George W. Matthew, Bellmont, Louden County, Va. Stamp has faults, and the cover has edge faults and edge tears at the lower left with part of the backflap missing as well. NO RESERVE!! Bidding starts at $1.00.
