U.S.A., #RO108d W. E. Henry & Co. 1c red Private Die Proprietary Revenue Stamp (WA290) A listing by Discount Stamp & Coin Co. U.S.A. Scott #RO108d One cent red on USIR watermarked paper "W. E. Henry & Co." private die proprietary match revenue stamp The tax was 1c for each 100 matches or fraction thereof The W. E. Henry Match Company operated in the Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania area for several years and then burned down. Company stamps were issued in both red and black, but no information is available as to which came first or how many of each were printed. They were issued from November 18, 1880 until October 21, 1882. 4,956,000 were issued on watermarked paper Unused Fine-very fine centering with four clear margins, appear to be fault freeCheck the scan for more detail on the centering, margins, and the perfs Retail value in the 2005 Scott Specialized catalog is $27.50 Most viewers of this lot already know this, but for those who do not - the Scott Catalog introduction to this section says, quote " These stamps were usually torn in opening the box or container. Values quoted are for examples which are somewhat faulty but reasonably attractive, with the faults usually not readily apparent on the face. Sound examples at a grade of fine-very fine can sell for 50% to 300% more than catalog value. Outstanding examples of stamps in this section with a lower catalog value can bring up to 10 times catalog value ." The stamp for sale is from an extenisve collection of USA Private Die Proprietary Revenue Stamps which will be listed here, all are the property of a prominent Charlotte collector of USA and Possessions who is donating all of his proceeds to a scholarship fund at his University. At this time we have listed and sold most of his collections of: 1) United Nations, 2) USA plate blocks, 3) USA airmails, 4) USA booklet panes, 5) Danish West Indies, 6) Ryukyu Islands, 7) Philatelic Library, 8) USA cut squares and entires and 9) Canal Zone - but a few of each, including both high and low priced items, are still available. Many of the better items in this Match and Medicine Revenue stamp collection were purchased (by us for the owner) at the Andrew Levitt Auction of the Morton Dean Joyce Collection in New York 25 or so years ago (could it possibly be that long?)
