You're looking at a genuine goatskin USAF type A-2 in size 42R by Cooper Sportswear Mfg. Co. The A-2 was designed for the US Army Air Corps in the 1930s and most widely issued to pilots during WWII. Cooper was one of only a handful of contractors to produce the A-2 during WWII. Although the A-2 was discontinued in the late 40s and replaced by cloth or nylon flight jackets, it remained an iconic symbol of WWII that was coveted by postwar pilots, and served as a model for virtually every military flight jacket that followed it. Even now, the A-2 is easily the most recognizable, popular, and copied of all flight jackets. By the late 1980s, the USAF recognized the historical significance of this legendary jacket and resumed issuing the A-2 to combat aircrews in limited numbers. These 'new' A-2s differed little from the original design, except that they fit a bit looser than the tighter fitting versions issued during WWII. The jacket listed is an example of the current issue USAF A-2 and is manufactured by Cooper's Defense Contract Division. It includes trademark features such as a one-piece back, snap-secured front 'flap' pockets, shoulder epaulets, hook-type wind flap closure, and knit waist and wristbands that give the A-2 its trim, classic fit.
