PERFECT BIT FOR BREAKING YOUNG DRESSAGE OR HUNTER / JUMPER HORSES! For sale: (1) gently used Herm Sprenger D-ring (Dee-ring) double-jointed snaffle bit with Aurigan mouthpiece in the "Dynamic RS" style in size 5.25" (5 1/4"). The Dynamic RS means that the mouthpiece has curved bars so the bit fits more neatly into the horse's mouth. As the Herm Sprenger rep told me herself when I purchased this bit new, this bit is exceedingly gentle as to relieve tongue and palate pressure via the curved bar design when there is light and steady contact on the reins, but if the horse requires more contact on one rein or the other, the curves of the mouthpiece will then act on the horse's bars/tongue/palate. This can make rein aids much clearer for a young horse, which is why I chose this bit to break my young baby (with great success, I might add--we got a 73% at our first schooling show 6 months later...!!!) :) :) :) The D-ring style also helps teach a young horse to steer, since the large D-shaped rings will put pressure on the opposite side of the horse's face when pressure is applied with one rein (i.e., when you use an opening right rein, pressure will be placed on the horse's left cheek, which helps him learn to respond to the right rein aid and turn right). The advantage of D-rings over full-cheek bit styles (which operate much the same way for breaking a young horse by applying cheek pressure to help steering lessons) is that if the horse rubs his face on fences, etc. or gets excitable and the reins get tangled, the horse is much less likely to get injured with the closed-ring style of the D-ring bit than the full-cheek style. I have ridden young horses with both styles of bit and felt that for my horse, the D-ring would be safer for her as she is very busy in the mouth and I thought that getting tangled or caught up on a full-cheek bit was a real risk for her. As for quality, I compared this Sprenger bit to other similar, cheaper bits (like the JP Korsteel copper mouth) and the workmanship of the Sprenger was far superior. If you do have the opportunity to compare the bits side by side, you will see that the design of the jointed center mouthpiece is much smoother with the Sprenger, whereas the JP has some sharp curved ridges/points that could poke a horse in the mouth when the bit flexes. That is why I chose to spend the extra money on the Sprenger. I gently used this bit for less than 1 month before my mare "graduated" to the loose ring Sprenger KK Ultra Aurigan double-jointed snaffle bit (we do dressage), which is the only reason this bit is for sale, as I do not plan on breaking any more youngsters any time soon. If you do hunters or jumpers, of course, you can continue using the D-ring bit for the duration of your horse's career after breaking. I felt this bit worked flawlessly and was very gentle on my young horse's untrained and unspoiled mouth. Plus, the Aurigan of the mouthpiece definitely encourages gentle mouthing of the bit and salivation to help keep the mouth soft and responsive. I could not recommend it more highly. The bit has some light signs of wear (teeth marks, light scratches, etc.) on the mouthpiece and rings characteristic of it having been used in the mouth of a busy young horse for approximately 1 month. Other than that, the bit is in excellent condition. A new bit retails for $149.90 at Dover; buy my used bit and save a bundle! My loss is your gain!! :) This bit has been already been cleaned/disinfected and is completely ready for your use. PLEASE MEASURE YOUR HORSE'S MOUTH CAREFULLY using either a bit sizer or a plastic straw or a piece of string (you can Google other various methods of bit sizing, or feel free to contact me with any questions you may have), as I will not accept returns due to incorrect sizing. My mare is a 16.1 hand Thoroughbred and the 5.25" size was ideal for her, but muzzle shapes and sizes vary quite widely, of course!
