USS Abraham Lincoln CVN-72 Nimitz Class Ship Model Hand-carved and Hand-Painted Mahogany Model USS Abraham Lincoln CVN-72 Nimitz Class Supercarrier Model Ship: USS Abraham Lincoln CVN-72 is the fifth Nimitz-class supercarrier in the United States Navy and was named in honor of the 16th president of the United States , Abraham Lincoln. Its maiden Western Pacific deployment was on May 28, 1991 in response to Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. While enroute toward the Indian Ocean, USS Abraham Lincoln was diverted to support evacuation operations after the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in Luzon island, Philippines . It supported Fiery Vigil and was the largest peacetime evacuation of active military personnel and their families in history. USS Abraham Lincoln departed toward the Persian Gulf, to run reconnaissance and combat air patrols in Iraq and Kuwait , assisting allied and US troops involved with Desert Storm. In 1992, USS Abraham supported Operation Southern Watch. In October 1993, USS Abraham Lincoln had flown air patrols over Mogadishu in support Operation Restore Hope. In 1995, Abraham Lincoln was deployed to the Persian Gulf , assisting Southern Watch and in Operation Vigilant Sentinel. In June 1998, USS Abraham Lincoln began its fourth deployment and was again deployed in the Persian Gulf in support of Southern Watch. read more
