This auction is for an exquisite scale model of the USS Essex, with details including bound masts, yards with stun's'l booms and foot ropes, carved full sails running and standing rigging with carved scale blocks, dolphin-striker, safety nets, carved fiddle-end prow with coat-of-arms, anchor with chains and hawse pipes, catheads, bitts, stove pipe, sail winch, belaying rails and pins, companionway, helm and tiller, ship's bell and other details. The planked hull with open gun ports with metal guns, pressed stern and quarter gallery decoration boarding companionway and rudder is copper sheathed below the waterline and finished in black. Measurements overall - 32" (L) x 11" (W) x 24" (H) The ships are built from scratch. They are not pre-fabricated kits that someone puts together. All handcrafted from real wood taking many hours of tedious labor. Individual hull planks bent and shaped , wood is then placed piece by piece form the hull and deck. If you look closely, you can see the nails used to secure the strips of wood to the internal ribs. This attention to detail alone sets us apart from competitors. Some Admiral's Line ships utilize double plank on frame construction. Wood is cut piece by piece and put over the base of the ship's hull to the water line. About 'USS Essex': Built by the citizens of Essex County, Massachusetts, who presented her to the US Government, USS Essex was commissioned under command of Captain Edward Preble. On her first voyage in 1800, during the war with France, Essex helped convoy a fleet of Dutch East Indiamen through the Indian Ocean. In 1801 she was one of several ships sent to the Mediterranean to contain the Barbary Corsairs harassing American shipping. She sailed first under Captain William Bainbridge and then under Captain James Barron. Following the war, she was laid up from 1806 to 1809. At the beginning of the war of 1812, under command of Captain David Porter, Essex captured ten prizes, including HMS Alert (18 guns) between July and September.
