Discovered by paleontologist Dr. James Kirkland, Utahraptor (meaning “ Utah plunderer” or “ Utah thief”) turned out to be the largest known dromaeosaur of its kind. Dromaeosaurs (also commonly referred to as "the raptors"), are believed to share a common ancestor with birds, and also are the family to which Velociraptor belongs. During the filming of Jurassic Park , director Steven Spielberg received heat for making his Velociraptors 6 feet tall (they are only 2 ½ feet tall in reality). Up to then no member of the raptor family had come close to that tall—until Utahraptor came along! read more
