UTAMARO - Japanese Woodblock Print KITAGAWA UTAMARO The Courtesan Tagasode of Daimonjiya from the series " Seven Komachi of the Green Houses" Date: originated c. 1795, this Showa era from recarved wood blocks Size: oban, 10.4" x 15.6" Condition: VG, no condition issues, uncirculated print, never framed Impression: Fine, nice impression, stong keylines and excellent registration Color: Fine, good strong color with bleed through to the verso This print depicts the courtesan Tagasode of the Daimonjiya house in the shin Yoshiwara, the licensed quarter of Edo. The coiffure of this design is beautifully drawn. The woman's head is half turned to the left, and she looks down pensively. In her right hand she holds a long, slender tobacco pipe to her lips. The cartouche in the upper left of the print shows the title of the print series, and the artist's signature is at the lower left. At the right is the womans name and the name of the establishment she worked for.
