Paper highly detailed scale model kit of the Launch Complex - Apollo Saturn V moon rocket complete with the VAB Vehicle Assembly Building , LCC Launch Control Center , MLP Mobile Launch Platform , Crawler Transporter , Umbilical Tower with Swing Arms, White Room, and Crane. This is a hard to find limited edition model. At approximately 1/700 the VAB measures about 8 inches square without the low bay. Its just the right size to fit nicely on a desk or in another small display-its not three feet tall. The kit includes an interior for one high bay, into which the Saturn with Crawler fits nicely and an interior for the low bay. Doors may be positioned opened to allow viewing the building interior, or closed. Model seems very nicely detailed in full accurate colors for the Apollo era, and photographically realistic in appearance. Many details appear to be based on detailed photos. Rooftop fixtures including stairway exits and air conditioning housings are accurately reproduced. The approximate 1/700 scale is similar to many aircraft carrier and ship model kits (not included) which could be used for size comparisons. If you have the 1/700 scale Takara or Furuta Space Shuttles, you could easily modify the crawler by removing the umbilical tower to display the Shuttle on the way to the Launch Pad 39. The Vertical Assembly Building (VAB) - later called the Vehicle Assembly Building - is one of the largest buildings inthe world. It was originally built for assembly of Apollo/Saturnvehicles and was later modified to support the Space Shuttle. In the future modifications may be made to accommodate Constellation Program. The 4 High Bays were used for integration, stacking and testing of the complete Saturn vehicle. The Low Bay area served as the entrance through which the Apollo spacecraft and stages passed before being lifted by crane for stacking. During Saturn build-up operations inside the VAB, the stages are hoisted onto a Mobile Launcher Platform in the High Bays and mated together to form a complete vehicle . When assembly and checkout is complete, the crawler-transporter enters the High Bay, picks up the platform and assembled moon launch vehicle and carries them to the launch pad 39. The VAB covers 3.25 hectares (8 acres). It is 160 meters (525 ft) tall, 218 meters (716 ft) long and 158 meters (518 ft) wide. It encloses 3,664,883 cubic meters (129,428,000 cubic feet) of space. Steel: 89,421 metric tons (98,590 tons) Concrete: 49,696 cubic meters (65,000 cubic yards) Piling: 4,225 open-end steel pipe piles, 0.4 meters (16 inchs) in diameter were driven 49 meters (160 ft) into bedrock. Air Conditioning: 9,070 metric tons (10,000 tons), 125 ventilators. Lifting Devices: 71 cranes; two 227 metric ton (250 ton) bridge cranes. Siding: 100,800 sq meters (1,085,000 sq ft) insulated aluminum panels; 6,503 sq meters (70,000 sq ft) plastic panels. Doors: T are 4 High Bay doors. Each opening is 139 meters (456 ft) high. VAB equals 3.75 Empire State Buildings The Launch Control Center , LCC , includes four firing rooms so that multiple missions can be trained for, planned for, and flown simultaneously. Large windows look out at the launch pad (although only managers are permitted to physically watch the launch vehicle during ascent). All other control consoles face away from the windows and pad. The large windows are protected by huge slab shades which can be rapidly closed in the case of an explosion.
