A Very Rare Val-Kill Walnut Ladder back side chair, Hyde Park, NY circa 1930'sVal-Kill industries, Hyde Park, NYProbably made by Otto Berge circa 1927-1938All walnut wood, hand turnings. A copy of a early 18th century Sausage turned ladderback side chair. Stamped "VAL KILL" on the back bottom most stretcher. Retains the original woven spun paper seat.Val-Kill industries was a furniture company partnership established by Eleanor Roosevelt, and 3 of her friends in 1927. The shop employed mainly immigrant workers, and skilled artisans at the time. The business closed in 1938 due to the Great Depression. In 1945 the shop where the furniture was made became Eleanor Roosevelt's permanent residence after FDR passed. The site is now preserved as a National Historic site, Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site, in Hyde Park, NY. A example of this chair is in the museum at Hyde Park.Size: 44 1/2" tall, 16 1/2" deep, 20 1/2" wide, and 18 1/2" seat height.Condition: Overall excellent preserved condition, with the original wrapped paper seat.
