The trombone was made by H. Van Engele in Lierre Belgium. The Van Engele family operated a musical instrument factory in Lierre from 1813 to 1926. This trombone was manufactured by the great grandson, Henri Van Englen between 1893 to 1926. The bell measures 5 3/4 inches and reads Fabrication, Artistiques & Perfectionee, H. Van Engelen - 66 Rue delisp, Lierre, Modele Adopte par, Mr Dax, Professuer au Conservatorie de Bruxelles. This horn appears to have been presented to Mr Dax. The trombone is very unusual with 6 valves that operate separately, the instrument is played in the same way as a slide trombone. No valve pressed is 1st position, 1st valve is 2nd position and so on. This trombone may have been invented by Adolph Sax in the 1840's. It's my guess that the opera orchestra's were getting larger and the trombones were running out of room for the slide so they thought a slide player could easily adapt to this independent valve system. All the valves are in good working order and all the slide move except one. The horn can be played but not very well. The 6th valve has a replacement top valve cover and finger button. A repair on the tuning slide as can be seen in the 8th photo.
