This Kaleidoscope model is called "The Contessa". It was made sometime in the 1980's and it is signed "Van Cort Instruments", by the maker who closed the Maine USA shop in the year 2000. This is a fantastic Kaleidoscope, heavyweight, collectible and decorative. Made of paper, beads, with a glass and solid brass exterior, this piece is approx. 6" in height x 2-1/2" diameter base. The base has green felt to protect surfaces, and a brass turning knob at bottom to allow changes in design/colors. The glass tube allows viewing of the interior workings, so you can see the decorative print design on the interior and the glass vial with beads turning at the base. The eye scope is a brass fitting at the top. This works best in well lit area's. The glass tumbler moves with each turn to create various beautiful designs. It is inscribed just below turning knob with "Van Cort Instruments", weight approx. 1 pound, 5 ounces. It was part of my mother's collection. She purchased most of her Kaleidoscopes on her travels and this one came from a famous tobacco shop in Ireland, P.J. Carroll and Company. There is a sticker on the bottom of the felt pad from the shop. "Kalos" is a Greek term for "beauty".
