VANUATU AMBRYM SPIDER WEB MASK Origin/ Tribe : Melanesia, Vanuatu, South Central Malakula Age : Approximate age 50 years old Materials : Wood, fiber, Boars tusks, Boars teeth, spider webs, cocoons, fiber, resin, earth pigments Size : Overall Height 16" (41 cm), Width 6.75" (7 cm) Provenance : : Collected in 1968 by the son of Karl Muller. Acquired from a collection in Brussels Belgium Description : I'm uncertain of the exact ritual and social contexts this type of mask "n'dem nabwikai" was used in but it is of a dreaded devil-like variety. It is presented on a custom metal display stand and is expressively dramatic with large inset animal teeth. A similar mask housed in the Noumea Museum can be seen on page 49 figure 72 of "Arts of Vanuatu".
