This is a delightful little... Vaseline Opalescent Glass... four Footed... Covered Jam Jar... in that always elusive old âeoeFan and Featherâe pattern. This delicate beauty standing just a bit over 6 and 1⁄2 inches tall with the cover on... about 4 1⁄2 inches tall with the cover off... and 4 1⁄2 inches across the top rim. It appears to be of a excellent quality Vaseline Glass... and in excellent condition. This was an old Northwood Glass Company pattern that first entered production in 1900 when the glass makers was operating as the Northwood Works of the National Glass Company. I believe the molds were later acquired by the Westmoreland Glass Company after Northwoodâe(tm)s demise. However... this ornate Jam Jar is unmarked as to maker... which is not surprising!!!... Over the years Iâe(tm)ve seen these in both marked... and unmarked examples. I should also mention that this Vaseline Glass is highly fluorescent under the Black Light. A generous application of Opalescence âeoefrostsâe the top of the handle on the Cover... the top rim of the Bowl... and the outer edges of the four elegant scroll like feet. The fanciful... Victorian style... âeoeFan and Featherâe pattern adorns the four side panels as well as the quartered panels of the Cover. A one inch âeoemarbleâe like ball... sets atop the cover... serving as a handle. .. and four stylish âeoefeetâe hold the entire piece about 1⁄2 inch off the table top. This Vaseline Glass is bright yellow under normal light... but âeoeexplodesâe with a brilliant florescent green when placed under the Black Light. Just a super quality piece of Opalescent Vaseline Glass!!!... I have no doubt that any âeoefertileâe mind could come up with numerous uses for this eye catching beauty... like a Covered Candy Bowl... Nut Bowl... Trinket Box... or for serving up your favorite Jellies... Jams... or Marmalade!!!... Then again... you might just want to set it up on a shelf or window sill and drink in all this beauty... wondering about the fertile mind that dreamed it up... and the competent artistic hands that brought it to life!!... Vaseline glass has becoming quite scarce in the marketplace. This is due primarily to tighter controls government has placed on the use of a key ingredient... uranium... that is needed to make this color of glass. Uranium is also employed in the production of armor piercing shells used by the military... and I also feel sure that the tighter controls on uranium was put in place to keep it out of the hands of would-be terrorists... hoping to build a âeoedirty bombâe. Uranium not only gives Vaseline glass itâe(tm)s intriguing yellow green color but it is also what makes the glass give off itâe(tm)s brilliant fluorescent glow under black light.
