This auction is for a very nice, early WWII Japanese bayonet with scabbard. This is an early Type 30 bayonet; 'variation A' from Larry Johnson's reference information on Japanese bayonets. Overall length is just over 20 inches & the blade length is about 16 inches. This was the first pattern of production design having the rounded birds-head pommel with contoured grips held in place by screws and washers-spring push & return tension at pommel is very good. This pattern was the first with the hooked guard with 'spear tip' and fullered blade. The ricasso (flat area of blade just above the guard) is stamped with the "Nagoya" maker's mark-looks like the number '8'in a circle or two stacked circles in a larger circle. The wooden grips show some wear from use and age and have a a few small indentations, but are original, intact and with no missing pieces. The blade is in nice shape with minimal sharpening (not abused or poorly done) and with no nicks in the blade edge and perfectly intact tip. The scabbard is the correct early model with nice bluing, only a few small rust spots and one small dent about the size of a quarter on one side only. Overall a very nice period piece and of collectible & historical value. Starting at only $9.99 with no reserve this is an excellent opportunity. Good luck and God bless.
