WW1 German M16 helmet in untampered, original, very good condition purchased 30+ years ago from an area veteran's widow. Shell is very nice without dings, dents, or other damage, and retains the majority of original finish, exhibiting some areas of very light corrosion/patina; the shell is clearly stamped G62 at the left ear indicating the size and manufacturer, Gebruder Gnuchtel A.G. located at Lauter/Sachsen, as well as a lot number in the interior dome. Interestingly, this helmet has both ventilation lugs plugged with what appears to be chewed up paper to reduce cross draft or noise, as mentioned in The History of the Steel Helmet in the First World War. The leather liner band is also in very nice condition and held by three undamaged split pin retainers which appear to be original to the helmet; the correct rear retainer with the thicker head is present. The three liner pads are somewhat dry with one exhibiting a 1 1/2" long area of separation; one liner pad displays an area of blackish material and a small cigarette-like burn mark. Three of the six drawstring holes have pull-throughs but all six tongues are intact and one horsehair filled sizing pillow is present. Overall a very good representative and displayable helmet.
